'CompTIA' ('Computing Technology Industry Association') is a not for profit organisation that was formed in 1982. The company offers vendor-neutral certifications that have made it a global number one in this industry. 'CompTIA' A+ & N+ provide a firm basis for a Systems career in I.T., and also a very good basis for other more advanced qualification programs.

As a part of their 'ISO' standardisation drive, 'CompTIA' have updated both 'A+' and Network+ exams to '2009' editions. A+ examinations which began with the number '600' (i.e. the 2006/2007 edition) are being phased out globally. In Britain, they cease being offered on 31.08.2010. As both the '600', and the new '700' exams are currently allowed to be taken in Prometric and Vue test-centres, it makes sense to study for the '700' exams now, & avoid having to re-certify later. 'CompTIA' 'A+' Essentials and CompTIA A+ Practical Application are the new examination titles (220/701 & 220/702 respectively). The principle modifications were a total re-structuring of the preceding 4 examinations into just two examinations, and the inclusion of some coverage on more recent technologies. Although the old A+ had four exams within the whole program, only two were required to get the accreditation. During the last four years, the industry has grown to the point where all 4 examinations are now considered necessary - hence the reformatting into 2 essential exams. Anybody who has previously achieved the 600 exam may bring their certification up to date by sitting a bridging examination : 'BR-003'. Extra training will almost certainly end up being necessary, particularly for individuals who only initially studied for two of the four electives. As for the 2009 edition of the Network+ : 'N10-004' is currently the examination number.
